Lily Joan Borchard was born May 7, 1925, at Dr Jude’s Hospital on the corner of Eighth Street and Orange Avenue, Mildura. She was the only child of Lily Myra Borchard née Sampson and Albert ‘Bert’ Borchard. Her mother had planned to name her baby Joan if it was a girl. But following her mother’s death four days after giving birth, Bert decided the baby would be named Lily Joan in honour of her mother. “He thought Joan Lily sounded silly”. While named in her mother’s honour, Lily Joan was to become known as Joan to family and friends.
